Minneriya National Park is a dry-zone wildlife reserve in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, centered on the ancient Minneriya Tank, a 3rd-century AD reservoir built by King Mahasen. Its forests, scrub, and grasslands depend on this water source and are easily accessed from nearby hubs such as Habarana, Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Polonnaruwa.
The park is best known for the seasonal “Elephant Gathering”: during the dry months (around June–September), hundreds of wild Sri Lankan elephants gather on the grassy shores of the tank to feed, drink, and socialize, creating one of the largest natural assemblies of Asian elephants in the world. Visitors usually explore by 3-hour jeep safaris in the early morning or late afternoon, when elephant activity is highest.
Minneriya also shelters deer, monkeys, crocodiles, and many bird species, including pelicans, storks, and several Sri Lankan endemics. Together with neighboring Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park, it forms a vital wildlife corridor, making responsible safaris that keep a respectful distance from animals essential for its protection.
